District Court Directions For Children in Care Judge “How can I help? Would it help to make directions?” Dr. Adam McAuley, School of Law and Government, DCU examines the District Court power to issue directions on any question affecting the welfare of a child in the care of the State. He traces the origins of this power by examining the legal regulation of alternative care prior to the Child Care Act 1991. He discusses the responsibilities of the District Court and the Child and Family Agency under the 1991 Act. He discusses how the High and Supreme Courts interpreted this power and considers the nature of the directions made by the District Court, including the extent to which directions highlight systemic issues within the care system.
